By the Grace of Allah (SWT) the World Memon Organisation (WMO) was formally launched at the 2nd Memon International Convention held in Dubai on 30th/31st March 2002.  This launch was witnessed by over 200 delegates from 19 countries of the world and made this a historic event for the entire Memon community.

Inauguration of the WMO:

The Convention was declared open by Mr. Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the Executive Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation Government of Dubai.  In his inaugural speech Mr. Sulayem extended best wishes for the success of the Convention and offered his support whenever required.  He was presented a memento on behalf of the delegates.  In return he expressed his gratitude by presenting a memento to Haji Abdul Razzak Yaqoob (ARY), President of the WMO.

In the welcome address Haji A. Razzak said that the roots of the Memon community dates back to the 18th century.  “Now in the 21st century, we have decided to come together and try to become one global force.  Our vision is to create a single platform for Memons worldwide in order to assist them in building a better life not only for themselves but for others as well.  We want the world to acknowledge the Memons as a large community as there are over one million Memons around the world.  The WMO would help them unite under one umbrella”  he said.

A Way Forward:

It was noted that at the highly successful 1st Memon International Convention held on 28th and 29th April 2001 in Dubai, it was unanimously resolved that an International Organisation of Memons shall be established for the upliftment and advancement of the Memon Community. This was the beginning of a new era, of selfless and dedicated service for the Memon community at a Global level.  A Steering Committee comprising of various countries was formed at that Convention for preliminary drafting work of the Constitution and other relevant documents. This task was successfully accomplished by members of the Steering Committee on the 29th March 2002 for presentation at the 2nd Memon International Convention for discussion and adoption.

Constitution of the WMO:

At the 2nd Memon International Convention the delegates approved unanimously the name of this new body as: ‘World Memon Organisation’ and finally adopted its Constitution, Standing Orders and also the WMO Charitable Foundation Trust Deed for registration purposes.

It was stated that the WMO would strive for the eradication of any disadvantages and all forms of discrimination faced by the Memons, and to co-operate with such national and international organisations having similar aims.  The WMO would foster better community relations between all religious, social, ethnic and national groups for the good of society as a whole.  It will work for alleviation of poverty in the Memon community and improve the quality and standard of living of its members, in addition to projecting and promoting the dignity, language and culture of all Memons.

The WMO now seeks to assist Memon communities through the chosen representatives of their own national organisations and local institutions, corporate bodies as well as individuals.  The General Assembly of the WMO is comprised of all of them.  It is these representatives, together with Trustees and Patrons, who are entitled to vote for and select most of the members of the Board of Management of the WMO.

The delegates present at the above Convention firmly believed that the WMO will attract a growing number of Memons from around the world, who will participate in various social activities for the benefit of Memons internationally.
