Bantva
Memon Khidmat Comittee
Among those Memon organizations
which started dispensaries, Bantva memon Khidmat Committee is very
prominent. It moved a step further and established its own pathological
laboratory and also started providing X-Ray facilities at far cheaper rates
than those charged by others. The number of beneficiaries of these
facilities increased constantly.
The
management of the old hospital in Kharadar, known generally as Cement
Hospital is in the hands of some Memon philanthropists who have provided
huge funds for transforming this hospital into a big modern hospital. The
hospital managed by Karachi Health Association is known to be one of the
oldest hospitals in Karachi. With a view to expanding the activities of the
hospital, the foundation-laying ceremony of the new building was performed
on 29th March, 1989, and at that time a donation of one million
rupees was announced by the Dawood Family for treatment of children and Rs.
5 lacs were given by the Husein Ebrahim Foundation. For the maintenance of
the hospital, the Pakola family is giving a substantial amount.
DAWOOD
FOUNDATION
The
well-known Dawood family formed the Dawood Foundation, one of the largest
public charitable trusts in the country in 1961, with assets exceeding Rs.
50 million. The trust was inaugurated by Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan in
a public function. Late Mr. Ahmed Dawood, the Chairman of Foundation was
conferred Hilal-e-Khidmat, the highest civil award in Pakistan for his
initiative in launching such a big trust. The Foundation has contributed
large sums of money for establishment and funding of a number of schools,
colleges, dispensaries and hospitals in the country. The Foundation
contributed Rs. 10.5 million to Al-Shifa Trust for establishment of a modern
hospital complex at Rawalpindi. This was the largest single donation from
the private sector.
The
Foundation also awards scholarships to talented and deserving students for
higher studies.
In
1962, the Foundation established the well known Dawood College of
Engineering and Technology. The college which was the first institution in
the country with degree courses in Chemical Engineering, Electronics,
Metallurgy, and Architecture was nationalized in 1971. The Foundation also
launched Dawood Prized for Literature for best books published in national
and regional languages in Pakistan.
The
Foundation has constructed an educational complex in Karachi which includes
a modern girls school known as Dawood Public School and a beautiful and
spacious mosque. Work is in progress in expand the school building to
increase the existing strength of 700 students to 1000 students.
Mr.
Muhammad Hussain Dawood S/o Mr. Ahmed Dawood is presently the Chairman of
the Foundation.
Dispensaries
Pioneers
among those who started such dispensaries were Bantva Memon Khidmat
Committee, Vanthali Memon Volunteer Corps, Kutiyana Memon Association,
Halari Memon Jamat and others.
